All the Broken Pieces

Out of all of the Lone Star books on the 2010-2011 list, this was my first pick. Baseball and the Vietnam War is what caught my eye. Since my two boys are avid baseball players and we spend most weekends at ballparks across Houston, I wanted to see if this book was going to be a good baseball pick for all of my MJH baseball boys. My husband's dad served during the Vietnam War and my youngest son just recently did a school project on that subject. I also have to admit that I knew it would be a fast read becuase it is written in verse.

This story takes place in America two years after the Vietnam War has ended. Matt Pin is a 12 year old Vietnamese boy who is adopted by an American family. Even though he has new loving parents, he still wakes up with nightmares, reliving all the memories he left behind witnessing the war first hand. He feels guilty for leaving his Vietnamese mother and younger brother behind. Read All the Broken Pieces by Ann E. Burg to find out how baseball plays a part in this story and to find out if Matt can overcome his guilt and pain and come to peace with his new life.
